Holding it
Either hand, whichever feels like yours.
Pin the holding bead between your fingers and let the point hang freely. Your dominant hand gives greater control; your non-dominant hand is said to keep you more open to the pendulum’s energy. Try both and keep the one that feels natural.

Hold it under cold running water for about thirty seconds while picturing stale energy washing away, rest it in sunlight or moonlight to recharge, or pass it through sage or palo santo smoke.
Calibrate
Sit quietly and let it hang by the chain. Ask a question you know is yes, such as “Is my name [your name]?”, and watch how it moves. Then ask one you know is no.
Test
Ask “Show me yes” and “Show me no.” A smooth, consistent swing in a circle, back and forth or on a diagonal is a sign the pendulum is a match for you, and you’ll read it more easily over time.
