Born in fire, frosted over time.
Snowflake obsidian is volcanic glass, formed when silica-rich lava cools rapidly. Inside its dark black or deep brown body, small needle-like crystals of cristobalite gather into the white and grey spherulites that give the stone its snowflakes.
It is made mostly of silicon dioxide, and traces of iron and magnesium give it its black colour.
