Treasured for its vibrant blue as a symbol of honor, royalty, power and spirituality, lapis lazuli has been valued and traded for over 6,000 years across Afghanistan, Africa and Europe. Its name comes from the Persian word for blue. Ground down and exported, its blue with a hint of red undertone became ultramarine, a precious pigment coveted by artists, and the stone was also shaped into beads, cabochons and carvings. It is found in Afghanistan, Chile, Russia, Myanmar (Burma) and the United States.
