WHAT IS Tourmaline? Tourmaline is formed in host rock voids that fill up with hot mineral-rich liquids that cool down and crystalize to form Tourmaline. Black Tourmaline is also known as Schorl, which accounts for ninety-five percent of all Tourmaline in nature. The name Schorl was in use before 1400 because of a village known today as Zschorlau located in Saxony, Germany.
WHY IT'S AWESOME? Rainbow anyone? Although often thought of as black, it is the most colorful mineral known, naturally occuring in almost every color of the rainbow. Legend has it that tourmaline passed through the rainbow on its way to earth, and that’s what gives it all its colors.
Another awesome feature about Tourmaline is its three-sided prisms, no other mineral has a 3-sided prism. And if tourmaline wasn't awesome enought, is also a pyroelectric mineral, meaning it can generate a transient voltage or current when it is heated or cooled.
